Guidelines for Letters of Recommendation

To Recommenders:

Thank you for taking the time to write a letter in support of your student. Besides giving us another pair of “eyes on the student,” your letter will count toward the applicant’s numerical score. To help your student earn the maximum number of points for this category, please offer specific evidence of the following:

  • The candidate’s academic and career goals, both short- and long-term
  • The candidate’s involvement in community service, in and out of your educational institution
  • The candidate’s capacity for leadership
  • Any other features that make this person stand out in a positive way.

Brief examples paint the picture more usefully than general statements. Thus, a statement like “Her small group always laughs the most even though they earn the highest scores on group activities” is more helpful than “She works well with her classmates.”

Thank you again for your assistance to the committee and to your student.

Sincerely,
Scholarship Committee
